Madagascar!
It all started when we flew in. We were in Tana for a few days before our driver, a man named Gino, drove us out six hours to a place called Chez Rasoa. We went to a national park that night and then again in the day. Then we drove out another ten hours to a town where we saw an important lake. Then we went to another national park, where we went in the morning, in the night and then in the morning again. After that, we drove back to the city with the lake, and then back to Tana.

I just saw wild dogs! Okay that might not sound rare but it is, wild dogs are driving tourism in South Africa. They are critically endangered, and there are only a few thousand left in the wild. Another thing to know is… Johannesburg! It’s abbreviated Joburg, so that’s what I’m going to say when I’m talking about Johannesburg. Joburg has places called townships, one of those town ships is called Soweto. Soweto is a surprisingly safe place because the community punishes those who commit crime. And now I’m in tana (or Antananarivo if we are being exact) but the story of Madagascar is for another day, another Trip Tuesday.
The Recap
I’ve been in Cape Town for over a month, and it’s been fun. I’ve seen penguins, seals, and very impoverished people. But my favorite part is probably a gelato place called Gelato Mania. I’m sad that it’s coming to an end. I just hope I look back on this blog fondly.

Look, I know I said that I would stop making Thought Thursdays on signs, but I made no promises on Trip Tuesdays. So here we go, I think this sign is funny but also smart.
Seals!
Today we went on a harbor cruse, it was pretty fun. They talked about all the famous land marks such as the Alfred Basin and the swing bridge. The swing bridge is the same thing as a draw bridge except it swings to the side in stead of drawing up. The swing bridge replaced the penny ferry that saved workers a half an hour walk. The penny ferry only costed a penny but the swing bridge is completely free. Another thing we saw were the cape fur seals.

Weird Things
Would you rather be in a maximum security cell on Robben Island or a cell with 59 other people on Robben Island? Because I would rather do neither. But yes we did see Robben Island, it’s a classic tourist spot. The weird thing here is that prisons don’t look astonishing, they look like a giant run down house. Another thing is that the penguins here are called jackass penguins which is because they bray like a donkey. Here’s a audio file of them:
The Cape of Good Hope
So… my opinions did change. South Africa is actually a quite interesting place. There’s good food at this place called the Mojo Market, and a walk around the city won’t disappoint anyone except your legs and your feet. But my favorite part was when we did a tour to see the Cape of Good Hope. It started with a 2 hour long bus to the Cape of Good Hope. After that, they gave us an hour and a half to do whatever we wanted where we visited the light house at the top of the mountain. Then we tried to visit the light keepers house but ran out of time and had to go back to the bus. We decided we would be kicking ourselves if we went up the mountain then walked half a mile up hill on rocky terrain then went back down the mountain and then didn’t go on a walk on a bunch of wooden planks. Summary, South Africa is a pretty cool place.

So… we’ve been in South Africa for about 24 hours and everything is a little clashy because the shore and the mountains are a stunning sight while the city has some stunning smells and I don’t mean by stunning in a good way. We’ve already seen kids younger than me asking for food. Doordash seems to be the thing around here despite the fact that gas costs six dollars per gallon which is probably why everyone uses motorcycle’s. But the most popular job seems to be armed monitoring and response teams along with services to put up barbed and electric wire. Now this is only a first impression it can change and maybe after being in cape town for 39 days my opinion will change, maybe.
